The history of the house
About us
Residenza Amalphia is a home away from home in the truest sense: for many years lived in by our grandparents, this former bishop’s residence has been lovingly restored by us, brother and sister duo, Gerardo and Giovanna Del Pizzo. The space is an integral part of our family history and it holds a wealth of childhood memories, from the book-studded library of our grandfather (now a bedroom overlooking the bustling streets of Amalfi), to the discreet miniature terrace at the rear, which has provided a welcome morning sun trap for as long as we can remember.
Our aim was to maintain that family home essence – to conjure something of what it’s like to live right in the heart of Amalfi, being an integral part of its bustling centre, whose rhythm is punctuated by the majestic bells of the Duomo, yet also stowed away in serenity and comfort. We paid attention to history and tradition (commissioning the restoration of three beautifully frescoed ceilings and introducing classic Majolica tiles) while imbuing the space with a sense of modernity (think sleek lines, generous showers and fluffy towels).
Making our guests feel welcome is at the heart of everything we do. With a decade’s career in hospitality and a passion for his heritage, Gerardo’s vast local knowledge enables him to offer visitors the ‘keys to the Coast’, from off-the-beaten track trattorie recommendations to tailored suggestions that take in scenic treks such as the famed Sentiero dei Limoni (Path of the Lemons) to lesser-known walks, quiet beaches, historic buildings and trips to neighbouring towns.
Here you’ll be treated as a member of the family. You may even spot our father Alfonso cooking breakfast each morning. Residenza Amalphia is an exciting chapter for us and for the building, whose origins date back many centuries. We hope it becomes as special to our guests as it is to us.
